F. W. J. Schelling (1775 - 1854) developed a system of identity philosophy, which he first published in 1801. In subsequent texts, his ideas evolve and encounter the limits of negative philosophy. Schelling tries to explain these problems by moving towards a philosophy of freedom. In Philosophy and Religion (1804), he presents a basic interpretation of the philosophy of identity, dealing with criticism, but also addressing the problem of the unity of freedom and necessity, the transition from the ideal to the real, and thematizing some religious themes.
