A classic work of political thought, it aroused considerable controversy in its time. The author went to Jerusalem in 1961 as a reporter to follow the trial of Nazi official Adolf Eichmann. The essays, originally intended for The New Yorker magazine, were turned into a book that is actually a philosophical reportage. In addition to describing the circumstances of the trial, in which she applies her powers of accurate observation, she also formulates philosophical theses that provide a framework within which to think about guilt and responsibility in Nazi Germany. The book has had a stormy response, sparking a controversy that philosopher Isaiah Berlin has even described as a "civil war of intellectuals." Among Hannah Arendt's most debated insights to this day is the thesis that the evil committed by Eichmann was rooted in an absence of thought and "banality".
