Hiding Jews was deadly during the Holocaust. Quietly and disciplined, they were to turn to ash and smoke. Even the little Jewish girl Ilonka, who tells this story. In simple words and from the perspective of a child, she describes hunger, fear, disease, loss of dignity, manhunts, organized killing. She also describes the ways in which Jews in occupied Poland tried to escape and survive these horrors. Ilonka survived, but most of her relatives did not. She was determined to write about it for a long time. She is not trying to shock. She first hints at the worst horrors and then returns to them several times. The story of her family gradually emerges before the reader's eyes. But above all, the fate of a girl who lived through the entire war dressed in the oversized jacket of a former lemonade factory manager, and whose greatest treasure was a red thread from a cloth shoe with a sole cut out of Torah tablets.
