Design for the Real World (first published in Swedish in 1970) initially divided the design community with its innovative ideas and uncompromising critique of the prevailing approach to design, closely tied to commercial corporate practice and consumerism. Over the years, however, Papanek's polemical text has been a huge success: it has been translated into more than twenty languages and remains one of the most widely read texts on design today. In it, Papanek argues for inclusion, social justice and sustainability. The text is still a valid manifesto for a radical change in thinking about design, its forms and above all its mission. In his work, Papanek has applied the principles of socially responsible design, worked closely with design students and local communities in developing projects, and worked for UNESCO and the WHO. He has focused on marginalized communities, both in decolonized Third World countries and in Europe and the USA.
