Andrea Palladio (1508-1580) was the most important architect of the late Renaissance, but he can also be considered the most influential architect of the entire modern period. His innumerable palaces, churches and villas adorn many parts of the Veneto, the region of northern Italy, but buildings influenced by his style penetrated all over Europe and across the ocean not only during his lifetime but also throughout the centuries that followed. This is explained by their beauty, harmony and placement in the landscape, but also because, like his fellow Renaissance sculptors, he was inspired by antiquity, the original source of all European culture. But Palladio's undying fame is due not only to his architectural work but also to the theoretical treatise he wrote on his method of building, which has been published again and again all over the world since 1570, when it was first printed in Venice. His book was translated into English more than sixty years ago at a time when it was very difficult to travel to Italy from here, and those who did get there were mostly interested in other monuments. Today, the first Czech edition of the Four Books on Architecture is hardly available to those interested, so we are repaying the debt to our culture with a second edition, complete with a new pictorial appendix and maps of Venice and Vicenza showing the location of Palladio's buildings.
