Chasidská vyprávění

Martin Buber has devoted forty years of his life to collecting and retelling the legends of Hasidim. These stories - concise, energetic, often enigmatic - are the actual texts of the Hasidim. Through them is expressed the intensity and holy joy by which God becomes visible in everything. Chassidic teaching is, at its core, a reference to a life of passionate, ecstatic joy. But this doctrine is not a theory that exists independently of its realization. Rather, it is only a theoretical supplement to life as it was actually lived by the tzaddikim and chassidim, especially in the first six or seven generations of the movement that our book recounts. It is a testimony to the experience of dedicated souls in whom there is no room for calculation or arbitrariness. For these souls did not speak about themselves, but about what had deeply affected them. The content of their reports is not mere psychology, but life itself.
