Helena Diesing's image-rich book fills a gap in the field of Czech pop culture. Based on extensive research of contemporary periodicals, the author summarises this phenomenon from the first "bubble" to the first five years. She brings new insights into famous artists, including Josef Lada, Ondřej Sekora and Jaroslav Foglar, but also introduces dozens of completely unknown authors. The publication proves that the world of Czech comics before 1950 was full of a whole range of distinctive characters. It reveals the birth of those still famous today, such as Ferdy Ant or the Fast Arrows, and also reminds us of many forgotten heroes, including Pepina Rejholcova from the workshop of František Voborský or the gentlemanly Dandy from the internationally renowned cartoonist Bert.
