Cantos III.

The set of Chinese Dynastic Cantos was written from November 1937 to March 1939 and first published in January 1940. The source for the Chinese Cantos was Pound's French history of China, Histoire générale de la Chine ou Annales de cet Empire (Paris, 1777-1785, in 13 volumes). The Jesuit missionary Joseph de Mailla (1669 in France - 1748 in Peking) is often cited as its author. However, it is an annotated translation of older Chinese writings, based primarily on the most famous historical work of its time (late 11th century), the C'-ch'tongjian (The Full Mirror to Aid Those Who Rule), by S'-ma Kuang.
