The philosopher of religion and educator Martin Buber (1878-1964) also became famous for his German translation of the Bible, on which he collaborated with F. Rosenzweig. This work was accompanied by both extended articles devoted to biblical research and the shorter essays, lectures, and treatises presented in this book. In these, the author reflects on central biblical ideas, clarifies traditional and his own grounds of interpretation, and discusses them in the context of the rediscovery of the Spirit in the life of modern man as well. His statements urge a change in thinking, encourage careful reflection on current events, and at the same time breathe a timeless solidity. For him, the possibility of turning to the Bible today does not mean a return to something that has already happened, but a personal and ever-new finding of the power of the living Word, resulting in the transformation of the whole person. Life in God, then, is not an imitation of something we have in memory, nor a following of the deeds of former human lives, but precisely the paradox of perceiving the qualities and deeds of the Elusive One, who lets himself be known in an everyday, personal, intimate dialogue.
