Fairy tales depict the universal functions of psyche, yet contain no individual material. Primitive fairy tales - unlike modern fairy tales - contain the experiences of our ancestors, which they acquired in their encounter with the archetypal world. They are therefore often horrific and feature various supernatural beings. At the same time, however, they reflect a living psychological experience - in the fate of fairy tale heroes, man has been confronted in symbolic form for centuries with the difficulties he faces in life.
The present volume contains two of the author's classic works. In The Psychological Interpretation of Fairy Tales, C. G. Jung's psychological concepts that are important for the understanding of fairy tales are explained in a series of fairy tale stories. Animus and Anima in Fairy Tales focuses specifically on the archetypes that characterize the human experience of the opposite sex. The focus of the book is on the interpretation of classic Grimm's fairy tales. Marie-Louise von Franz approaches them in a distinctive way that shows insight and humour.
